How to Publish a Research Paper as a Student: A Step-by-Step Guide

From your project report to a published, citable paper: the steps, the structure, and the checks to make before you pay any journal.

Last updated:

Publishing a research paper as a student is less mysterious than it looks. Most final-year projects, mini projects and theses already contain the material for a paper: a problem, a method, results and a discussion. The work is in shaping that material into a short, focused article and choosing a journal that is honest about what it offers.

This guide walks through the full process. It applies to any journal, not just IJVAST.

Step 1: Decide what your paper claims

Write one sentence stating your contribution: for example, 'We built a low-cost soil moisture sensor and show it matches a commercial sensor within 5%.' Everything in the paper should support that sentence. A project report describes everything you did; a paper argues one result.

Step 2: Use the standard structure

  • Title: specific and searchable, under about 15 words.
  • Abstract: problem, method, key result, conclusion in 150 to 250 words.
  • Introduction: why the problem matters and what you contribute.
  • Related work: 8 to 20 relevant, recent sources, with what your work adds.
  • Methodology: enough detail for someone to repeat your work.
  • Results and discussion: tables, graphs, and what they mean.
  • Conclusion and future work, then references.

Step 3: Check originality and honesty

Write in your own words, cite every source you use, and run a plagiarism check. Do not copy text from your seniors' reports or online articles. Include only the people who actually contributed as authors, and get their consent before submitting.

Step 4: Choose a journal carefully

  • Check the subject scope matches your topic.
  • Verify the ISSN on portal.issn.org and a sample DOI on search.crossref.org.
  • Read the full fee and confirm you pay only after acceptance.
  • Ignore claims of UGC, Scopus or impact factor that you cannot verify.
  • Ask your guide whether the journal suits your requirement.

Step 5: Format, submit and respond to review

Use the journal's template, submit online, and read the reviewer comments calmly. Fix each point and explain your changes in a short reply. Most first papers need some revision; that is normal, not failure.

What IJVAST is, in plain facts

  • Full name: International Journal of Vast Advancements in Science & Technology (IJVAST), published by SkyInnovate Technologies.
  • ISSN 2839-5379 (Online), assigned by NIScPR, the ISSN National Centre for India.
  • Crossref member with DOI prefix 10.68296. Each published paper gets a DOI in the form 10.68296/<Paper ID>.
  • Open access under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) licence. Anyone can read and download your paper free.
  • IEEE two-column format. A free Word template is available on the Sample Paper page.
  • Editorial review target of 48 hours from submission to first decision.
  • Publication fee: Rs 1,200 for Indian authors (18% GST included) or USD 25 for international authors. It is charged only after acceptance.

What IJVAST does not claim

IJVAST is not listed in UGC-CARE, Scopus or Web of Science and does not have an impact factor. We would rather you know this before you submit than after. If your university, scholarship or promotion rule requires one of those listings specifically, check with your guide or department first. For coursework, project reports, conference-style publication, skill building, placement portfolios and an early publication record, a peer-reviewed open-access journal with an ISSN and Crossref DOIs is often exactly what students need.

Frequently asked questions

Can I publish my final-year project?

Yes, if it contains a clear result. Shorten it to a focused paper of about 4 to 8 pages in IEEE format.

Should my guide be a co-author?

If your guide contributed to the idea, method or writing, yes. Follow your department's rules.

How long does review take?

The editorial target is 48 hours from submission to a first decision. Papers needing major revision take longer because you have to revise and resubmit.

How much does it cost?

Rs 1,200 for Indian authors (18% GST included) or USD 25 for international authors, charged only after acceptance. There is no submission fee.

Is IJVAST UGC-CARE or Scopus listed?

No. IJVAST holds ISSN 2839-5379, assigns Crossref DOIs and publishes open access, but it is not listed in UGC-CARE, Scopus or Web of Science.

Ready to submit?

When your paper is in the IEEE template, submit it and get an editorial decision within 48 hours.
